RSVP Etiquette for Weddings and Parties

As a wedding and event planner, I always see couples stressed over RSVPs when it comes to their special day.  I mean honestly, why is it hard for an invited guest to simply put the RSVP card inside the stamp-provided envelope and just mail it off before the cut-off date?  I've always found that perplexing and very aggravating not only for myself, but for those financially invested in the wedding or event.
